The view. Not a morning or evening goes by that we don’t appreciate it. The cypress tree frames the sunsets for most of the year. We were told about this tree by the previous owners. It’s a truly special part of the experience. We love every part of the view. Evenings are magical with purple skies and clear days that you can see all the way to Pt. Reyes.

The proximity to the beach. Whether that is surfing or hot beach nights with picnics on the beach. Ocean beach is one of our favorite places on earth. We can take our kids to the beach in 5 mins. For surfers, you can surf for just 15 minutes if you want, or spend an entire day. You can time a perfect session before anyone else sees it.

The sound of the ocean. When you open the french doors in the master or the back windows to any room the ocean sounds come in. While sitting in the room you can take in the cool air and the rhythm of the ocean. The sound bounces off the backyard and fills the air.

Overall sense of calm when walking into the house. It’s peaceful and quiet. The open windows up front make you feel like you’re out in nature. Because it’s been completely redone it feels calming.

The warmth in the backyard on a sunny day. The east orientation of the yard means early sun and warmth with still air, even on a sunny day.

The 3 mile open pathway in front of our house. Whether it’s a weekend with the great highway closed or just the path alongside. There are excellent trails in every direction with serene nature.

Walking (or biking) distance to everything the sunset has to offer. Land’s End is a short drive up the hill. Golden Gate park is running or biking distance. The Academy of Natural Sciences in a short jaunt. Closer to home you have all of Judah, Noriega and Taraval streets at your fingertips, including great coffee new restaurants, and a host of new bars. Andytown, Devil’s Teeth, Damn Fine Pizza, Palms City Wines. You name it!

The sense of community:

Ocean beach is a special place.  Its made up of an amazing and diverse combination of a low key surf culture, multi generational families that have been in the neighborhood for years, and newer people moving in who appreciate the beach and low key nature of the neighborhood. This all comes together in a special community fabric that is unique to the area.

The food:

The access to Newer cafes, hole in the wall institutions, delicious Asian cuisine, fresh restaurants, and access to all of the SF food scene is something we love about the hood!

Neighborhood Gallery

1916 Great Highway

The Outer Sunset is a deliciously quiet residential enclave with quaint stretches of shops and cafes along its main drags of Noriega and Taraval Streets. Adjacent to Ocean Beach, this charming hamlet is replete with outdoor activity opportunities. Renown for its foggy summer weather, the Outer Sunset is a popular destination for folks wishing to escape oppressive summer heat.

Great walking, biking and jogging routes can be found along Sunset Boulevard, as well as delightful nature trails exploring the adjacent Golden Gate Park. This is a beach community, and on sunny days residents flock to the sandy beachfront, enjoying ocean walks, family picnics and occasional swims for the hearty few. Surfing is very popular year-round. Local destination Fort Funston is a bastion of family fun, with abundant dune exploration, and viewing of world-class hang gliding overhead. Nearby can be found the highest point in San Francisco, Mount Davidson, where hiking and breathtaking views are the course of the day.

And don’t miss the San Francisco Zoo! Its a fantastic chance for kids to experience wildlife first hand. There is an educational center which holds regular classes on wildlife and conservation. The recently renovated Parkside Branch of the S.F. Public Library holds educational events and exhibits. And one of the great gems of San Francisco, Stern Grove hosts a widely-anticipated free performing-arts festival each summer. Area residents prepare picnics, and make a blanket their home for the day while they are entertained by a wide array of performers and musical genres, including jazz, blues and opera.

The Outer Sunset, with regard to housing, offers a range of multi-family and single-family homes. Many residences offer details including hardwood floors, fireplaces, garages and level backyards, great for family gatherings. Muni’s N-Judah L-Taraval lines conveniently shuttle residents to and from downtown.
